ABOUT SENATOR Dewitt
Katie DeWitt was born in 1998 and lived in Antioch, California before moving to Walnut Creek in 2006. She attended Walnut Acres Elementary, Foothill Middle, and will be graduating from Northgate High in 2016. As a child, Katie enjoyed playing soccer with her neighbors but quickly realized that soccer wasn't for her. She started skiing at the age of three and entered the competitive scene at the age of seven. After racing for six years, she stopped and now skis just for fun with her sister and father. Katie has played lacrosse since the age of nine and continues to play on her school team. At school, she is a member of KEY Club and volunteers in various community events, such as runs and tree-lighting ceremonies. Katie plans to attend a four year university after graduation and major in business with a focus on finance.
Katie chose to research Guantanamo Bay Detention Camp because she had heard about its notoriety a few times but wanted to know more. After researching the prison, she was amazed with what she discovered; torture, expensive costs, and a lack of legal rights. She believes that GTMO should be closed and relocated to domestic U.S. soil because the detainees' lives would significantly improve if they were moved to a place with a larger population.
